Student Testimonials

Usually, when you decide to join an ESL school it is to learn English…But when you join ISS you also get a chance to expand your horizons, by learning more about the Canadian culture and by meeting students from all over the world.

I really would like to thank my two teachers, Brad and Robin, for their help, support and advice and because in a couple of weeks only, my TOEIC score improved from 620 to 855.

When I was a new immigrant to Canada in 1996, I decided to continue my education. My goal was to be a graduate student at UBC [the University of British Columbia]. At that time, the Department of Electrical Engineering required a TOEFL score of at least 600 to admit students. As my level was around 580, I needed to improve my listening as well as my reading skills. So I went to ISS and attended Mary's TOEFL class. It was a two-month course, starting in July and ending in late August.

I had a wonderful time during those days. We were divided into small groups, playing all kinds of vocabulary games, doing listening exercises, reading articles and writing in/out-class essays. I made significant improvement during the course, especially in vocabulary since the class spent much time on vocabulary and idioms. What I learned at that time helped me a lot, not only on my TOEFL test, but also in my present studies.

Shortly after the class finished, I wrote the TOEFL test in October. And I succeeded. I scored 607, which would not have happened without Mary's help. Finally, as I expected, I was admitted into the M.A.Sc. Program at the Department of Electrical Engineering at UBC in the fall of 1998. I am thankful for the TOEFL course at ISS.

Sincerely,
Jake, China

Hello ISS,

This is Anna and Norbert and we married on the 10th October 1998. From the picture, you can see us cutting our wedding layer-cake at our wedding party. This is a polish tradition that a young couple cuts the wedding cake and gives pieces to their guests.

The reason we write this letter is to thank you for moving our course term from August to June without any problems and to [our teacher] Jane for teaching us in a nice atmosphere. Your school belongs to the kind of schools in which students feel good and where English lessons are not boring but provide lots of fun. Your school is a place where you can meet nice friends from all over the world.

The time we spent in Vancouver was a really nice experience and we are sure to remember Vancouver and ISS forever.

With love,
Anna and Norbert

"Thank you for the great help that you had given to us. I learned so many things in our basic computer skills course. I can not forget you as our teacher. I will apply the knowledge that I learned from you."
