It’s that wonderful day of the year when people in 174 countries celebrate our wonderful Earth! It all started in the spring of 1970 when protests throughout the world called out for strong action to protect our most vital habitat, the environment on our earth. Although it’s a specific day many countries, including Canada, do wonderful activities throughout the whole month and see April as “earth month”. With weeklong celebrations this month is a great opportunity for you to get out and enjoy the natural beauty that Vancouver has to offer while also contributing to building a healthy environment in your community. “You can’t just stop contributing cold turkey when your whole life has been around making a difference,” says Paul Kjekstad, a recently retired elementary school teacher. After teaching for 33 years in the Coquitlam School District, Kjekstad now volunteers his time mentoring two newcomer teachers at Mentoring Connections. “Having been in the profession for so long, you think you don’t have anything left to share, but you do.
