Mentoring Connections

Mentoring Connections is an ISSofBC community initiative that brings together Vancouver-based professionals (mentors) and skilled immigrants (mentees) from the same professional area.

The goal of our program is to ease the transition of skilled immigrants into the Canadian workforce with the help of an experienced mentor.

Volunteer mentors are not expected or required to find employment for their mentees, but rather to offer career-focused advice and encouragement.

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day!

It’s that wonderful day of the year when people in 174 countries celebrate our wonderful Earth! It all started in the spring of 1970 when protests throughout the world called out for strong action to protect our most vital habitat, the environment on our earth. Although it’s a specific day many countries, including Canada, do wonderful activities throughout the whole month and see April as “earth month”. With weeklong celebrations this month is a great opportunity for you to get out and enjoy the natural beauty that Vancouver has to offer while also contributing to building a healthy environment in your community. Because it’s easy to get swept up in the energy, excitement, and frustration of a Canucks playoff run. [Continue]

BC teachers reach out to internationally trained colleagues

“You can’t just stop contributing cold turkey when your whole life has been around making a difference,” says Paul Kjekstad, a recently retired elementary school teacher. After teaching for 33 years in the Coquitlam School District, Kjekstad now volunteers his time mentoring two newcomer teachers at Mentoring Connections. “Having been in the profession for so long, you think you don’t have anything left to share, but you do. You have a lot to share,” adds Kjekstad. [Continue]
