Mentoring Connections

Mentoring Connections is an ISSofBC community initiative that brings together Vancouver-based professionals (mentors) and skilled immigrants (mentees) from the same professional area.

The goal of our program is to ease the transition of skilled immigrants into the Canadian workforce with the help of an experienced mentor.

Volunteer mentors are not expected or required to find employment for their mentees, but rather to offer career-focused advice and encouragement.

New Media Strategies for New Immigrants

New Media Strategies for New Immigrants

Mentoring Connections' clients are talented designers, architects, analysts, accountants, engineers, marketing professionals, software engineers. Many are MBAs and PhDs with several years of experience managing large projects and dynamic teams. When our clients come to Canada they are advised to hide their phenomenal skills and outstanding experience so that they do not seem overqualified for the survival jobs that they require. I do not suggest an alternative, but a supplementary strategy. [Continue]

Our newest mentoring partner: Mentoring Connections welcomes Deloitte

Three years ago, ISSofBC proposed the idea of a mentoring program that would connect skilled immigrants with Vancouver-area professionals, in career-focused mentorships. In June 2008, Mentoring Connections was born! Today, what is most exciting about our program is the number of high-profile corporate and community partners that are beginning to hop aboard. It is with great pleasure that we announce ISSofBC Mentoring Connections’ newest partner, Deloitte. [Continue]

    Social Media 101

Social media is a powerful tool and more people are embracing this technology every day. For many new immigrants, social media can be an intimidating space. However, if you keep a few things in mind, it doesn't have to be. [Continue]

Our Green Economy, Part II: Unexpected Opportunities

As I mentioned in Our Green Economy, Part 1, I encourage you to get out there and attend events that you are interested in. Even though the industries mentioned at this event were not my exact industry, the event allowed me to gain a broad perspective on what is happening in Vancouver. I met with a variety of professionals in a casual atmosphere... [Continue]

Our Green Economy, Part I: Think Outside the Box

I admit, I don’t intentionally network, but I often do it without realizing and have therefore managed to build strong connections with a diverse group of people. How do I do this? Well, it’s quite simple really: I go to events that inspire me. Just the other week I attended a public dialogue event called “A Green Regional Economy?” hosted by Metro Vancouver as part of its Future of the Region Sustainability Dialogue Series. [Continue]

“Dim the lights people, it’s time to dance.”

“Dim the lights people, it’s time to dance.”

Recently, The Tyee featured articles that address the idea of identity amongst young Canadians and immigrants. Originally published in Schema Magazine, the authors discuss how it feels to be asked, “But Where Are You Really From?” As I read their stories, I found myself nodding along in agreement. As a 1.5 generation Canadian, I’m all too familiar with what Tahira Ebrahim calls “the dance.” In my experience, “the dance” usually starts with the question: “What are you?” Each time I’m asked to explain myself, I find myself wondering what exactly we expect a Canadian to be. Positive attitude can take over…

    Positive attitude can take over…

The other day I was sitting in on a training session with Romanda, and while talking about mentoring relationships a few points were brought up concerning various interactions, life in general and the values each of us holds. Values such as commitment, honesty, trust, respect, integrity (and many more) all concern individuals to this or that extent. For me, positive attitude is of high significance. This is probably genetic –it’s my personality – but also, it’s because of my experience learning how to exercise positive affirmations in life. [Continue]

    Happy 2nd Anniversary, Mentoring Connections!

    Happy 2nd Anniversary, Mentoring Connections!

It’s unbelievable how two years can pass so quickly when you’re having fun. My first day as Laurie’s Mentoring Connections first hire doesn’t feel like it was two years ago, and the memories of each team member joining our team are still very fresh in my mind. Two years sounds like a long time when you have very passionate and excited coworkers who come to the office every single day with the same enthusiasm as their first day at work. [Continue]
