Mentoring Connections

Mentoring Connections is an ISSofBC community initiative that brings together Vancouver-based professionals (mentors) and skilled immigrants (mentees) from the same professional area.

The goal of our program is to ease the transition of skilled immigrants into the Canadian workforce with the help of an experienced mentor.

Volunteer mentors are not expected or required to find employment for their mentees, but rather to offer career-focused advice and encouragement.

Our Green Economy, Part II: Unexpected Opportunities

As I mentioned in Our Green Economy, Part 1, I encourage you to get out there and attend events that you are interested in. Even though the industries mentioned at this event were not my exact industry, the event allowed me to gain a broad perspective on what is happening in Vancouver. I met with a variety of professionals in a casual atmosphere... [Continue]

Our Green Economy, Part I: Think Outside the Box

I admit, I don’t intentionally network, but I often do it without realizing and have therefore managed to build strong connections with a diverse group of people. How do I do this? Well, it’s quite simple really: I go to events that inspire me. Just the other week I attended a public dialogue event called “A Green Regional Economy?” hosted by Metro Vancouver as part of its Future of the Region Sustainability Dialogue Series. [Continue]

5 Ways to Contribute to a Safe Workplace

I was a little late in finding out that May 2-8th was North American Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Week, which makes me think that many of you likely didn’t know either (unless you did, and then can claim you are smarter than me)! The fact that the week wasn’t highlighted to the extent that many other special days, weeks or months are (such as Breast Cancer Awareness Month) may be one of the reasons why so many of us go to work every day without knowing our rights regarding workplace safety. The Power of First Impressions

    The Power of First Impressions

I was reading "How to Connect in Business in 90 Seconds or Less" by Nicholas Boothman and learned of a study done at Harvard that I found extremely interesting and very applicable to both everyday life and to our networking and job searching. Consider the power of first impressions when you are networking: the people you meet are judging you after only a few seconds, so make sure you are giving a positive first impression. Here are a few suggestions offered by Boothman to help you... [Continue]

The Future of Our Region – Sustainability Dialogues

Here is an excellent opportunity to go out and participate in your community and help build our future! Metro Vancouver hosts a variety of Sustainability Dialogues that focus on different issues that impact the communities in the Lower Mainland. There is one tomorrow focusing on the South of the Fraser region. [Continue]

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day!

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day!

It’s that wonderful day of the year when people in 174 countries celebrate our wonderful Earth! It all started in the spring of 1970 when protests throughout the world called out for strong action to protect our most vital habitat, the environment on our earth. Although it’s a specific day many countries, including Canada, do wonderful activities throughout the whole month and see April as “earth month”. With weeklong celebrations this month is a great opportunity for you to get out and enjoy the natural beauty that Vancouver has to offer while also contributing to building a healthy environment in your community.
