Mentoring Connections

Mentoring Connections is an ISSofBC community initiative that brings together Vancouver-based professionals (mentors) and skilled immigrants (mentees) from the same professional area.

The goal of our program is to ease the transition of skilled immigrants into the Canadian workforce with the help of an experienced mentor.

Volunteer mentors are not expected or required to find employment for their mentees, but rather to offer career-focused advice and encouragement.

Sneak Preview Video: Meet Tully, Armi and Francisco

When I started to plan with Catherine a video campaign for our program, the only thing that seemed clear to us was that we wanted to give a voice and face to our mentors and mentees in our promotional materials. After two years collecting success stories from over 300 participants, we were convinced that some partnerships needed the spotlight. However, we weren’t sure if our mentees would agree to speak in front of a camera about the professional challenges they’ve been facing in Canada; we didn’t know if our mentors, Vancouver-based professionals, would agree to take their commitment with our program to a more serious level.

I approached our mentors and mentees with a really shy and tactful email, almost excusing myself for asking. Luckily, almost immediately, 13 participants agreed to share their success stories on TV, radio and internet. It certainly took the weight off of our shoulders and showed us that we were going in the right direction.

Go2Productions was our chosen partner to help us feature our skilled immigrants and career mentor volunteers in two promotional videos. We have over 3 hours of raw footage and it has been hard to choose from among the excellent clips. Since we feel that we have so many powerful testimonials, I decided to compile some of our mentees’ best pieces and share them here on our blog as a sneak preview!

Thanks Tully, Armi and Francisco for sharing your success stories with us!
