The Host Program seeks to ease the challenges faced by newly arrived immigrants and refugees by matching them with trained volunteer Hosts/friends from the community.

Who is a Host?

A “Host” is a Canadian volunteer.  Hosts can be individuals, couples, families or groups who are interested in:

  • Welcoming and orienting newcomers
  • Assisting newcomers in settling in Canada
  • Forming rewarding friendships
  • Pursuing a career in teaching or social services
  • Gaining a greater understanding of Canada’s, as well as Vancouver’s, changing multicultural scene
  • Learning about other cultures, countries and languages

What Can a Volunteer Host Contribute?

  • A commitment of 2-4 hours a week, for a period of six months with an individual, couple or family
  • Valuable tips and orientation to the newcomers’ new community, including basic services and resources
  • Friendship support

Who is a Newcomer?

Immigrants and refugees, people who are permanent residents or
destined to become permanent residents in Canada

What Activities Can Hosts and Newcomers Do Together?

There are many activities* volunteers and newcomers may enjoy
together such as:

  • Walks in the neighbourhood
  • Practicing conversational English
  • Visiting the library; community centres
  • Using public transit
  • Shopping
  • Visiting local attractions

* A more detailed list of recommended activities will be provided to program participants.

What do newcomers gain?

By being matched with a Host volunteer, a newcomer can:

  • Better cope with the stress of adapting and settling in Canada

  • Practice their conversational English

  • Adjust sooner and more easily to their new community

  • Learn more about Canadian life

  • Become a contributing member of their new society

How are people paired?

Our staff members recruit and train volunteers to become Hosts. We then establish compatible matches between volunteer Hosts and newcomers.  Matches are based on criteria such as similar interests, family size, age, occupation and most importantly, the needs of both parties.
