About Mentoring Connections

ISS of BC Mentoring Connections clients

Mentoring Connections is an ISSofBC community initiative that brings together Vancouver-based professionals (mentors) and talented immigrants (mentees) from the same professional area.

For skilled immigrants, establishing their new careers in Canada is challenging. Differences in business culture, credential requirements, or lack of connections all keep an experienced professional from working in his or her chosen field.

That's where our volunteer mentors step in. Mentors help by:

  • Acquainting mentees with Canadian workplace culture and the Canadian labour market
  • Giving industry-specific advice on professional development, licensing and accreditation
  • Discussing networking strategies
  • Building mentees' confidence as they transition to the Canadian workforce

For employers, Mentoring Connections is a valuable opportunity. By encouraging your employees to become mentors, you will expand their leadershipo skills, build cross-cultural knowledge, and connect with a pool of talented immigrants. For more information, visit our Partners page.

The mentoring relationship is:

  • A rich and rewarding opportunity for mentors and mentees, who meet for an average of 4 hours per month for 3 to 6 months.
  • Flexible and designed to meet the needs of the mentor and mentee, who can meet at convenient times in person, by phone or by email.
  • Supported by the Mentoring Connections team throughout the entire relationship, and includes guidance, resources, training and the opportunity to attend organized events.
